My mother lives with my elder sister. Since my mother’s sole income is 50,000 yen per month from a pension and my sister (who is covered by health insurance from her employer) has low income, they have trouble making ends meet. Although I live separately from them, I remit 100,000 yen per month to my mother. Can I name my mother as my dependent?

Since, in principle, a family member should be a dependent under the health insurance of a family member living with him or her, if any, your mother cannot become a dependent of an insured person who lives separately from her. In this case, she would be a dependent under your elder sister’s health insurance.
