Does the Health Insurance cover illnesses developed overseas?
You can receive the Health Insurenace benefits for treatment in other countries. You must pay the full medical care fee yourself and apply for reimbursement later. You must present an attending physician's statement, a receipt, and an itemized receipt for reimbursement. Please remember to obtain these slips. Since April 1, 2016, you are also required to submit a letter of consent for investigations.
However, the amount paid in benefits may be lower than the amount you paid. Benefits will cover the lower of the amount under standards for insured examination or treatment in Japan or the amount actually paid overseas.
Note that for those traveling abroad, the benefits provided by international travel insurance will often exceed health insurance benefits for overseas medical care costs.
Health insurance benefits for overseas medical care costs are not available for treatments for which you traveled overseas to receive.
You must attach Japanese transactions of the medical consultation details and receipts indicating the name and contact information for the translator.
The Takeda Health Insurance Society employs the standards for insured examination or treatment in Japan using the insurance points (average amounts) specified by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
